Client: Sport Northern Ireland in partnership with Waterways Ireland
The Challenge
To undertake a feasibility study to assess the potential of developing a walk and cycle route along the Lower Bann between Toome and Coleraine.
The aim of the study was to:
‘Provide details of costs and viability of developing a Blueway type route between Toome ad Coleraine along the Lower Bann corridor as a regional / national facility for individuals / walking clubs / walking for health groups / tourists etc.’
The Role
We were commissioned by Waterways Ireland and SportNI to:
add value to the Lower Bann Corridor, connecting the space along the river in a strategic way
enhance the tourism offering of the Lower Bann corridor
improve access to the countryside in a carefully managed and sustainable way
allow for the creation of doorstep outdoor recreation opportunities for local communities through the development of Community Trails
create a new walk and cycle product that showcases the unique landscape, environment, heritage and wildlife of the destination
complement the existing Canoe Trail and to allow for the development and promotion of a ‘Blueway’, similar to other Waterways Ireland managed navigations in the Republic of Ireland
encourage more visits, bed nights and spend within the area
