Galway / Mayo Blueway – Waterways User Survey4th December 2022
Outdoor Recreation Northern Ireland has been appointed by Galway City, Galway County and Mayo County Councils to identify opportunities for the potential development of new Blueways around Galway City, River Corrib, Lough Corrib and Lough Mask through the preparation of a feasibility study.
Blueways are branded and accredited tourism experiences which offer waterscape experiences in, on or near the water for locals and visitors, using lakes, canals, rivers and coastal environments to walk, cycle, swim, kayak, Stand Up Paddleboard and engage with nature and heritage.
The study area is popular with outdoor enthusiasts and visitors alike who come to enjoy the buzz of the City, its canals and nearby beaches, and the dramatic scenery and landscape of the River Corrib, Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. However, it is often felt that the rivers, canals, lakes and coastal areas are underused and do not see their full potential. Through the identification of sustainable outdoor recreation products such as Blueways, there is an opportunity to improve access to waterways for the local community and visitors, and will help to improve local economies by adding value to existing destinations across the whole region.
This is an opportunity for those that live near to, and those that use the waterways to help us to understand how they are being used and to give their views on the current and potential future opportunities and issues for Blueways development. This information collated will help to ensure that any enhancement of the local and visitor experience will have a positive impact on the local community and visitors, whilst respecting the natural and built heritage values of the area.
Members of the public are invited to express their views on future development by taking part in an online survey:
The survey will close at midnight on Tuesday 3rd January 2023
